The position of chess and draughts in some European countries after 1500

 The orthogonal game was combined with the long king: the unchequered chess board was in use in cultures with Arabic influence and in these civilizations draughts had got the long doubleton.

 The diagonal game was combined with the short king: people in regions within the Roman sphere of influence played chess on a chequered board and they continued playing draughts with a short king.

 Spain assimilated both Arabic (the Moors) and Roman influences. Draughts in Spain was an Arabic/Roman mixture. Arabic (Moorish): the game was played with the long king. Roman: the Spanish chess board was chequered, see the plate below, so that Spanish draughts became a diagonal game.
