Manoury

In his book of 1787, page 29, Manoury informed his readers about a certain Laclef, a very strong Parisian draughts player, who had made inquiries into the origin of Polish draughts. Laclef had died decades ago, but Mr. *** had copied his papers and passed them on to Manoury. In Italics the relevant French text, followed by my translation.

Il m’en a entr’autres communiqué une qui m’a appris que c’étoit sous la Régence, & au Palais Royal même, qu’étoit né le Jeu de Dames à la Polonoise. Le fait est assez singulier. Un des principaux Officiers du Régent, qui étoit habile à l’ancien Jeu, y jouoit ordinairement dans son appartement avec un Etranger de sa force qui voyageoit & qu’on appelloit dans le Palais le Polonois, soit qu’il fût effectivement de Pologne, soit que la façon de se mettre lui eut fait donner ce titre, sous lequel seul il étoit connu. Un jour qu’ils jouoient ensemble, il se trouva dans leur partie une position qui donna lieu à une observation de l’Officier du Régent; il montra à l’Etranger un beau coup à faire, si la loi du Jeu permettoit aux Pions de prendre en arrière comme les Dames. Celui-ci, après avoir examiné & combiné assez long-temps, convint du fait; mais il observa à son tour qu’il y auroit un bien plus beau coup à faire si le Damier, au lieu de huit lignes, en avoit dix, & qu’au lieu de quatre cases à chaque ligne, il y en eût cinq; ce qu’il prouva sur le champ en dessinant sur du papier un Damier tel qu’il demandoit pour son opération. From one of these papers I learnt that Polish draughts was born in the Palais Royal during the Regency. The story is rather particular. One of the field officers of the Regent, a keen player of the old French draughts variety, used to play with a stranger of the same strength in his room. In the Palais, this stranger was called le Polonois, either because he was born in Poland or because people only knew him under this name. Some day in one of their games they got a position which was the occasion for the officer of the Regent to make a remark: he showed the stranger a nice combination which would be possible if a singleton was allowed to take in a backward direction, like the doubleton. After a thorough and long examination his opponent was convinced. But he for his part found an even more splendid combination if the board would have ten rows instead of eight and if each row would have five squares instead of four. He asked a piece of paper and proved it by drawing such a board.

Les choses en restèrent-là pour lors; mais une quinzaine de jours après, l’Etranger revint au Palais Royal suivi d’un Domestique qui portoit un Damier semblable à celui qu’il avoit dessiné, avec quarante Pions, blancs & noirs. Il fit voir en même-temps à l’Officier du Régent le plan qu’il avoit dressé de la marche du nouveau Jeu, & des règles que cette marche nécessitoit. Ils employèrent plusieurs séances à l’examiner, à l’arranger, à l’essayer ensemble, & il résulta de leur travail le Jeu que l‘on joue aujourd’hui, qui ne fut connu d’abord que de quelques-uns de leurs amis communs, & qui ne se répandit que quelques années dans le Public, sous le titre de Jeu de Dames à la Polonoise, ainsi nommé, sans doute, à cause de l’Etranger qui passoit pour Polonois, & auquel l’Officier du Régent voulut en faire honneur. That day they let the matter drop, but a fortnight later the stranger visited the Palais Royal with a servant carrying a draughts board of the shape he had drawn, with forty white and black pieces. At once he showed the officer of the Regent the moves of the pieces he had puzzled out and his description of these moves. They needed several meetings to check, change and try it, and the result of their work was the game we play today. In a few years it became known under the name of Polish draughts, without any doubt as the officer of the Regent wanted to do honour to the stranger who passed for a Pole.

En effet, le Roi Stanislas a pu dire avec raison à M. de la Condamine, que le Jeu Polonois n’étoit appellé en Pologne que le Jeu François, & en conclure qu’il avoit été connu en France avant de l’être en Pologne (…) (Page 34)

Indeed, king Stanislas was right when he told Monsieur de la Condamine that the Polish game was called French draughts in Poland and concluded from this it was known in France before the Poles borrowed it.

Or le Régent étant mort à la fin de 1723 (au mois de Décembre) & le Jeu ayant commencé à devenir public dans le courant de 1727, il y a environ trois à quatre ans d’intervalle entre sa création & sa publicité (…) (Page 35)

As the Regent died at the end of 1723 (in the month December) and the game had become generally known in the course of 1727, there must have been three or four years between the creation of the game and the day everybody knew it.
